I don’t know about you, but this winter came for me. Hard. The kids got sick, I got sick, the weather stinks and my husband is in the middle of his most demanding med school rotations. I struggle during these days because I tend to have an all or nothing attitude when it comes to self-care. If I can’t run 5 miles, then I might as well eat fast-food. Twice. Before noon. I think that means it’s time for a 30 day self-care challenge!
I know there are small, easy changes I can make to feel a little better on these tough days. I’ve decided to challenge myself to add these things to my to-do list every day for the next 30 days. I hope you’ll join me!
The 30 Day Self-Care Challenge
Take a vitamin.
We should all be eating so well that we don’t need these, but if you’ve been neglecting yourself a bit or restricting your calories a daily vitamin is a good idea.
Eat oatmeal every morning.
Wha? Oatmeal EVERY DAY? Yes! This may not be very scientific, but I always eat better throughout the entire day when I start with oatmeal. There are so many ways to make it, I promise you won’t get bored. Wholefully.com has some amazing overnight oat recipes. Carrot cake is my favorite, but–since I’m not a Greek yogurt fan–I skip the yogurt and go with a full cup of milk. (Okay, so maybe I skip the carrots, too. I hate shredding things.)
Drink 64 ounces of water.
You don’t have to drink only water all day long, but be sure to down at least 64 ounces of PURE water each day.
Exercise or stretch for 20 minutes.
Don’t flinch, but by exercise, I mean cardio. Calculate your target heart rate and try to stay in the cardio zone for 20 minutes. If you think you hate cardio (like I used to) your heart rate is probably higher than it needs to be for cardiovascular exercise. Using a heart rate monitor can be helpful in this situation. Not sure how to get started? Fitness magazine has a lot of fun cardio plans to choose from.
On days when cardio is just too much, do some yoga or simple stretching instead. I love this 30 Minute Flexibility Yoga video available for free to Amazon Prime members. It’s perfect for beginners. Not an Amazon Prime member? Click on the banner below to get a 30 day free trial!
Eliminate caffeine after 12 pm.
I’m pretty sure I can squeeze all 80 ounces of coffee in before noon, so I should be good here.
Breath deeply for 5 minutes.
We’re women. We never relax unless we add it to our to-do list. So add it to your to-do list!
Totally do-able, right? Join me on Twitter with #OptiMomSelfCareChallenge to check-in, vent, get support, and let me know how you’re feeling during the challenge. Let’s push one another to make self-care a priority!
